Aloha Friday

Photobucket
Over at Kilani's blog she started the Aloha Friday, in honor of in Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So she thought that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting, too. I thought this is a great idea so therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

This past week Lyla, our 9 month old daughter, has been fighting a cold. This has lead to many nights of difficulty getting to sleep, difficulty nursing, general fussiness, congestion and stuffy nose. We tried to use the nasal aspirator to get out the mucous, which she absolutely hates. We tried to show her how to huff her nose to get some of the mucous out that way - which to all you who are interested, she just laughed about that. We bathed her in the Johnson's vapor bath for babies who have colds. We have given her the Baby Rub - the baby Vicks. We have given her Tylenol, we have not given her any cold medicine because of the controversy surrounding that. Anyways, my question today is one that all parents will be able to answer....

How do you help an infant get over a cold? Any tricks up your sleeve would be quite helpful...

Hope everyone has a great Aloha Friday!

It's been awhile since my kids were babies but I remember using saline drops and a humidifier. I also used that suction thing they give you when you come home from the hospital to try to relieve some of the stuffiness.

Good luck!

Lots of rest, fluids, and hugs. That's the best for them!

since my kids are asthmatic, i am always mindful whenever they catch a cold. i give them lots of water, citrus juices, and chicken soup!

when these fails, i use a vaporizer

Turn on your shower full blast on the hottest it will go and sit in the steamed up bathroom for as long as your can stand it. It's like a super powered humidifier and always helps clear up anything my little boy has pretty quickly.

I was going to give the same shower/steam tip as above!

I always liked using a humidifier too.

Yes! Nosefrida! Let me tell you, that is the best invention ever....
after the first time we used it, my son slept through the night for
the first time in a week.... whew! Now I'm hooked and I tell all my
friends about it. I bought mine on Amazon but they might have it other
places.

I saline, humidifier, suction thingy and lots of love. Poor little thing. It's hard for babies to be sick because they can't take any meds. Hang in there.

Ayr drops (saline drops) and let the drops sit in the nose for about 2 mins, and then suck out the nose with an aspirator. My son hates it, but it really clears his nose. Also a humidifer at night in his room, with some vicks drops in the water. A vicks bath before bedtime too. Hope your little one feels better soon!

It's been MORE than awhile since my kids were little, but I did always use a humidifier - alwats seemed to help. And just FYI ~ for years, we have all used Airbornne - I know, but I swear, it works!!!

Humidifier, lots of fluids, rest... Lots of cuddling lol :) You know when mine were infants one trick I learned was to roll up a baby blanket and put it under the baby mattress in the crib..so that the mattress would be at a slight incline.. I really noticed it helped with the breathing when they slept..(with the cold.. I didn't leave it like that all the time lol)

Cool mist humidifiers are great and saline nose drops. When my little guy had a cold I used some drops of my breast milk in his nose (not sure if this is an option for you). I had heard about this for a while and never tried it. After several sleepless nights hubby and I agreed it was worth a shot. The stuff worked amazingly well. Good luck and I hope everything is sleeping and feeling better soon.

A humidifier is a big help.

My sons pediatrician recommended this nasal spray called Neo-synephrine. There are different versions of this stuff but you want the one that has HCI at 0.05% or less. You can only use it for 3 days and that is it. My son was probably about 9 months old when I started using this. It does help but I have found we do better for three days and then we are back to the drawing board. Their is also a medicated nasal sprey that the Dr can now perscribe. I don't remember what it is called but something tells me it isn't any different than the over the counter Neo-Synephrine.

Good luck!!! I know it is tough, we are always battling colds around here.

I agree with others, humidifier, and suction the nose a lot, they have one now that is battery operated that rocks, even plays music to try to distract the kids!
