Still here

Yes, I am still here. No baby yet. I do believe that we are going to have a May baby, rather than an April one, but I am probably jinxing myself and I will go into labor tonight.
I have gone back to work. I am working 8 hour shifts until the end of my pregnancy rather than the 12 hour shifts. This is making things a little bit more easy on me, as it is a bit more tolerable. I am still pretty tired after 8 hours and now I am wondering how I ever did 12 hour shifts.
We had an ultrasound a couple of weeks ago, and everything is looking good. At that time the baby was 5 pounds 14 ounces, and they said the babe will probably gain about 1/2 pound a week until delivery, so that would take us to about 7 pounds 14 ounces. I think that sounds like a pretty good size. My amniotic fluid level has decreased, but they are still monitoring me with Non-Stress tests twice a week. I am still having Braxton Hicks, and a lot of lower abdominal cramping, but no dilation yet. He checked me today. The baby has started to drop though, and is at station -2. I am finding sleeping to be quite challenging, as the babe seems to have a foot wedged under my right rib. I guess it is getting tight in there.
We are pretty much ready for our new family member. The nursery is complete, the bassinet is beside our bed, the car seats in the cars, and the bags packed for the hospital.
I will keep you posted, and post some photos later, but I wanted you all to know that we are still here, just waiting for the babe to make its grand entrance.

Baby Showers, Pre-term contractions, and only 1 month to go!

This past week has been a very busy week for all of us. 2 weekends ago, my mother in law and good family friend, Auntie Sue, gave me my first baby shower. It was a lot of fun and people where very generous to our new little addition. We were "showered" with beautiful and thoughtful gifts. The shower was at 3pm in the afternoon in Pickering. Ryan and some of the other males of the family organized a baseball game outing at the Sky dome to see the Blue Jays play the Red Socks. So, my Dad and Ryan left from my parents around 9am in the morning. My mom, sister and niece Emily left around 11am. On the way there, we stopped for some wonderful Swiss Chalet chicken. Yummy! I am so deprived from the good Canadian Swiss Chalet, so my sister suggested we get some for lunch. Great idea Pam!

There was about 12 people at the shower, mostly family and some friends. We played fun games and people guessed what they think the babe will be, when it is going to be born, and the weight. That sheet is on my fridge right now so we will have to see who the winner is. There was more yummy food with lasagna and salads and of course ice cream cake for dessert with some fruit. It was a great afternoon. Thanks for all the hard work preparing the shower Auntie Sue and Lorraine, and thanks to everyone for their generosity.
Here are some photos from the shower:

Ryan and I headed home the next morning and enjoyed some of the sunshine by doing a bit of yard work outside. I had seemed to have caught a pretty good cold and was suffering from the sneezing, running nose, coughing, general cold issues. The next morning, Monday morning, I had to work - but it was class to get re certified for basic life saving and advanced life saving, so at least I wouldn't be on my feet for 12 hours. After class I went to labor and delivery for my Monday Non Stress Test (NST), and the nurse came in shortly after hooking me up and said to me; "Do you realize that you are having quite a few contractions?" Now, I had been feeling the baby quite a bit that day, but I thought it was the babe more so then contractions. The funny thing was, during my course I was sitting beside a Labor and Delivery RN, and she turned to me at one point and said to me "Are you having contractions?", because I kept rubbing my belly. But there on the monitor, you could see plainly, and I could feel the contractions occurring every 2 to 7 minutes. Now, don't forget that I had this cold and all I wanted to do was go home and go to bed. Instead, they kept me for 2 hours to monitor me. The doctor was called and he wanted them to check to see if I was dilating with any of these contractions, and luckily I was not, so I was allowed to get home. I was told that it is common for women who have polyhydramnios, the high amount of amniotic fluid, to have early contractions and as long as I don't have any cervical changes it is not considered preterm labor, rather preterm contractions, or Braxton Hicks contractions, which are normal. I get home, still having contractions off and on, and now notice that I am bleeding from the vaginal exam. Another call to the MD, who assured me not to worry and I was told just to take it easy, which is what Ryan made me do.
On Tuesday, I decided to pull out the package from the MD's office and read what the warning signs were to preterm labor and I had almost all of the signs. I was still having contractions intermittently, so I called the MD and again was reassured that things were ok and to try drinking lots of fluids, to help stop the contractions. By the end of the day, I was feeling a lot better. My belly was not tight, the contractions had almost stopped, the bleeding had stopped and I felt better having spoke with my doctor. My doctor said that if I didn't want to go to work the next day, that he would give me the approval to stay home, but if I wanted to go in, I could go.
So, on Wednesday, I thought I might as well go to work. I felt pretty good, the Braxton Hicks were tolerable and to be expected, but my cold was still pretty bad. I had felt contractions off and on through out the morning but I wasn't counting the amount of them. At lunch time, I noticed that the bleeding had restarted and I decided I would go down to labor and delivery just to be on the safe side. I talked to the nurses and we called the doctor who wanted to put me on the monitor just for bit to make sure things were ok. Once the monitor was placed on me, it showed I was having contractions every 2 to 3 minutes. The nurses told me that I wasn't going anywhere so to call back up to my unit and tell them I wouldn't be back. The contractions continued for about 1 1/2 hours and them they decided to start an IV and give me a fluid bolus to see if that would help slow them down. The fluid worked wonders and slowed them down to approximately every 10 minutes or so. The doctor came and saw me around 6:45 and told me that I couldn't work until seen again on Tuesday (tomorrow), and they scheduled an extra NST for Friday, and let me go home.
My NST on Friday and today were both fine, only about 3 contractions in he 40 minutes that I was there. I should mention that the babe is looking great through all this as well.
Tomorrow I go for an ultrasound, I am excited to see how big the babe is, and I will get to talk to the doctor and see what he wants to do about me going back to work. I hope that he lets me go back to work, I don't want to be on bedrest. He may put me on 8 hour shifts though, which would be fine with me.

On Friday, Ryan's work threw him and 2 of this pregnant colleagues a surprise baby shower. Again, we were showered with beautiful gifts and we were very appreciative of their generosity. It looks like Ryan had a great time, and here are some photos from his shower.

Now, today is exactly a month before the babe is scheduled to arrive. I haven't a clue when the babe will come. I hope it can wait until the end of this week at least, especially since Ryan is going to Chicago on Wednesday for work. It would be just my luck that the babe decides to come on the day he is out of state. With all this preterm contraction drama was going on last week, I became quite nervous about the fact that we didn't have anything organized for the babe. This weekend we worked on getting ready for the babe, all the clothes are washed, all the bed sheets/linens are washed, we cleaned up the bathroom and made room for the babe's bath supplies, we put the car seat in the car, and started to pack the hospital bags. I am feeling much better now that we have started to get ready. Here are some photos of the babe's room, just waiting for the babe to show up.

Lamaze Class Drop outs

We are official Lamaze class drop outs, and I am OK with that. In fact,I feel so much better about it. You know when you are planning on doing something you worry that you are going to upset someone, well I was worried that our Lamaze instructor would be upset and try to convince me to stay with the program, but she didn't. She actually told me that I was being a good "mom", and that I did in fact have too much on my plate right now and dropping this event was being responsible. So, that made me feel 100 per cent better, although part of me was a tad bit disappointed that we couldn't keep up with it, because I think it would have been a good class.

This week has been a well needed break from after work events. Since we dropped Lamaze, and our other class had this week off for Easter break, we did not have any after work events. I was nice to come home and watch TV for an hour, or have Ryan come home and actually sit together and catch up.

Exciting news happened yesterday. Our friends J.J. and Heidi had their 3rd baby, their 3rd boy. Nolan Scott was born yesterday at 3:23 in the afternoon, weighing in at 7 pounds 14 ounces, and 20.5 inches in length. We are looking forward to meeting him once they get settled in at home.

I am still going to the hospital twice a week from my non-stress test, and things are looking fine. The babe is doing what the babe should be doing and the doctors are happy. No deceleration in the heart rate with activity, rather a very active baby with an expected acceleration in heart rate. Yesterday the babe went through an aerobic workout while I was hooked up and it's heart rate was bouncing up in to the 190's with activity. I guess it like my fresh fruit, peanut butter toast and decaffeinated tea for breakfast.

Ryan's parents bought the babe's change table on their visit last weekend. The babe's room is starting to look finished. We just have to get our glider chair and start washing clothes and linens.

Hope you are all well, talk to you soon.

Too much

Sometimes do you feel like you have too much going on? Heck, I am sure most of you moms out there feel that way everyday. With children to organize, school to get to, work for yourself, housework and homekeeping tasks, and then after school organizations to attend I am sure this is just part of life. Well, I haven't even become an official mom and I am already feeling this way.

This week has been "too much" for me, and hence I am sitting at home today rather than being at work. My weekly life now consists of my 3- 12.5 hour shifts at work, that usually become more like 13 hour long days, 2 days of hospital testing for my non stress test, and 2 nights a week of prenatal classes. Oh yeh, and doctor appointments popping up here and there as well. Then add in my other daily lifeisms -like household chores, meals, laundry, you know, routine stuff and I don't know where the time is going to come to fit all this stuff in.

Yesterday wasn't one of my worst days at work, but it was pretty bad. I had a patient that was transfered to our unit from another floor that was pretty sick. Of course the transfer came at 11:45, and I didn't know about the transfer until 11:30, so no hope for lunch was in sight until 2:30. I guess it could have been worse, I could have not gotten to lunch at all, a common nursing problem. Issues ensued with this patient's well being making for a busy afternoon, with a lot of general "running around" in attempt to maintain a stable blood pressure.

Yesterday night was the first class for our Lamaze class. Something that I had been looking forward. I had hoped to sneak out an hour early, as class started at 7pm. Rather I left at 7pm, ran to McDonalds, grabbed a quick burger and dashed over to the Lamaze class. The class was good, but we did not get home until 10pm, and then a quick shower and off to bed without even talking to my husband, or having any time to unwind. Then I was awake off and on through out the night with stomach cramps, horrible indigestion, nausea and a very overactive babe. At 2am, I decided that lack of sleep alone would make me a poor nurse to any patient today, and called in to work for today.

Monday was a little better, but not much. I worked my shift at work and then went straight down to labor and delivery for my first stress test. The only saving grace was that Ryan came to sit with me for this test, so we were able to talk abit and catch up on each other's day. We were there about 40 minutes, again raced home and got ready for the next day.

Tomorrow I am again busy with my doctor's appointment, stress test, a funeral and our other prepared childbirth class at night.

So I am trying to figure out how to ease this overwhelming amount of stuff going on
right now. I am thinking of dropping out of the Lamaze class which is disappointing to myself and probably Ryan. Our instructor is excellent and it is a personal group with only 2 couples. However, there is overlap in the course contents between our Lamaze and our Prepared Childbirth classes.

It is ironic as in these classes they are teaching us relaxation strategies and I honestly feel more stressed and busy right now in my life than I have in a while. So, I feel that I have to do something to eliminate that stress and maybe getting rid of one of the classes is the answer?

Update . . .

Well, I have been a bit blog tardy lately as time is flying by quickly. I couldn't believe it when I saw my baby counter today to say only 65 days left until the babe should make it's grand appearance. I am starting to get a tad bit more nervous as to the fact that this babe has to get out of me. I hear the horror stories of my girlfriends labour details as well as the good labour stories, and I just pray that my story is a good one. Last week we started our prepared childbirth classes at the hospital and I was a bit disappointed in them. So we will see what next week brings. The lady seemed really unorganized and maybe she was just having one of those days. We are also going to take a Lamaze course. I had voiced my wishes to my doctor about wanting to stay away from the epidural if at all possible and he suggested we try to take a Lamaze course and gave me a name of a Doula whom he would recommend. Luckily for us, this doula is offering a course starting next week so we are going to attend that as well. That will give us classes to attend both Tuesday and Thursday nights, so we are going to be quite busy with that.

At my last doctor's appointment, I was told that I now have a bit too much amniotic fluid on board. This is called hydramnios or polyamnios. I have 21 cm of fluid and depending on the amniotic fluid index that you look at I am either not too high, or a little too much. I have seen two different indexes, one that says the normal amount is below 18, and another that says below 25. So, my doctor being the thorough MD that he is, is going to start sending me for Non Stress tests, 2 times a week starting at 32 weeks, which is next week. This will continue monitor the level of amniotic fluid as well as the babe. This all makes me a little nervous as high amniotic fluid could be a sign of congenital abnormalities. My MD assured me not to worry about it, which is hard when you start to read more about it online and such.

So, as you can see with classes, tests and oh yeh, work, the rest of this pregnancy is going to be pretty busy. As well, I have made all the necessary appointments, such as dental, hair, eye, interviewing pediatricians, you know, all the stuff you want to get done before the babe arrives.

We got the border up in the nursery and it looks great. We are almost finished with that room, we are going to get the change table, and the glider and then it should be completed. All we need is the babe!

This weekend I went home to throw a bridal shower for my friend Patti. Patti is getting married in June and I am her matron of honor. So, Saturday, in the midst of a horrendous snow storm, a group of girlfriends gathered to celebrate Patti's upcoming wedding.

It was a lingerie themed shower. Patti did receive a lot of nice gifts. I held the shower at East Side Mario's Restaurant in London which worked out great. I was going to have it at my parent's home however, my sister had been in the hospital sick with her Crohn's for the past week, making my parent's house the center for 3 active kids. Therefore, I was quite glad that I had decided to have it at the restaurant instead. 9 of the 12 people made it and no shower would be complete without some silly shower games, gifts, cake and laughter.

This shower game was to design the best bridal gown for Patti, and Patti would have to choose the best dress. Which one do you think she choose?

We had the honor of 2 newborn babies with us. Both of which slept sweetly for the party. All in all it turned out great and I was glad to have to opportunity to throw Patti a shower, as she is the type of friend that would do anything for you.

Anyways, that is what I have been up to lately. I hope you are all well.

The Babe's Room Continued

This past week the babe did quite well again with purchases made in it's honor. My parent's came and visited us and bought us the crib that we wanted for the nursery. We put it together in a flash and it looks great in the room. A lot larger than it looked in the store's display room, but still looks great. I haven't washed the bed linens yet so I haven't got a photo with it all dolled up, but here it is as it looks now.

Then today, Ryan and I headed out to Lowes and bought some supplies to work on the babe's closet to make more room in it. I think we did a great job, and it gives us more space. The cubby holes are great, since we are not going to buy a dressor rather, we are going to buy a change table with baskets instead.

We also put up a new curtain rod and hung up our valence.

Next we will have to put up the wallpaper border. The Sherman William's paint guys told us to wait 2 weeks before we put up the border to ensure the paint was cured, so we will do that in a week or so.

The babe up close

Today we went for our follow up ultrasound and great news - no placenta previa!! We are very happy and excited. The babe is now 2 pounds 11 ounces, and the heart rate was 150. Our clinic got a new utrasound machine which does 3d/4d pictures of the be, so here they are. The babe was not in the ideal position but you can definitly see the little being inside me.
To make things better, we went and got our taxes done and we are getting a return this year!
Today was a good day. I think we will go put together the babe's crib.
